Beautiful Campsites in the U.S.
- Bear Rocks, West Virginia
The short hike (1 mile) into this beautiful campground will be well worth it and if you want to get further out, there are more campsites to hike to. This high-altitude plateau has characteristics typically found in Canadian landscapes.
With grassy meadows, giant boulders leading to sweeping vistas of the Allegheny Mountains, heaps of rhododendron in the springtime, crystal clear rivers and streams, and winding paths through the Monongahela National Forest, Dolly Sods Wilderness is, in my opinion, a true gem of a hiker's paradise on the East Coast. There are campsites as close as 1 mile into the hike, but you can hike the whole 11.9 mile loop.
- Round Bald, North Carolina
This super easy hike to the campsites near Round Bald is the perfect intro to backpacking for kids or newbies, but serves just as well for the more experienced backpackers who can't squeeze a longer trip in over the weekend.
This short (.5 mile) hike in leads to a grassy opening with amazing views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. There are designated campsites right along Round Bald as well as several more up the Appalachain Trail to the Northeast. Among them, the Overmountain Shelter sits 5 miles up the trail and sleeps 40 people comfortably - the largest shelter along the Appalachian Trail.
- Gros Ventre Wilderness, Wyoming
Catch incredible views of the Tetons, escape the crowds, and keep an eye out for wildlife - bears, moose, elk, fish, and a whole slew of marmots.
Take highway 89 out of Jackson, headed north, and turn on to Gros Ventre Rd. This will take you right past the campground, wild rivers, and ample hiking. Keep driving for about 20 miles as views of the Tetons appear behind you, and ample backcountry camping options become available.
